These entries are becoming weekly instead of daily, but it is vacation time after all and this is still valid even though I’m retired. However, much has passed since my entry a week prior.
Last Sunday I met with friends at the Palliser to listen to Herman elaborate on the theme of the Calgary Stampede and the - white - development of the West. It is too upsetting to most to mention the suppression of Native Culture that occurred in conjunction with that mentioned development. Entertaining such contrasts simultaneously is the basis for reconciliation, but presents a big psychological challenge to most of the ‘new arrivals‘.
On the preceding Saturday John and I visited three funeral homes to familiarise ourselves with the offered services and their costs. We did get the full attention of the sales representatives, but the service offered showed little variation, I.e. there was no range of options to select from in spite of the professionalism of the presentations.

On Monday aft Jack and I met at our usual place and talked two hours full with politics, religion and personal affairs. On Tuesday it was laundry day and yesterday I stopped at the Knox midday meeting and from there on to buy a Calgary calendar and some gifts for Sarah, BJ and kids. Then on to Rene and Eve to pick up Eve’s little painting that I’d bought the Sunday before at her Stephen Ave market stand. Rene had the printout of the fraudulent emails he had received and gave me a ride home.
I was home at four and got ready to go for dinner at Sarah’s. They are - as a family - in the midst of pulling up stakes to move to Der Schweitz within a few weeks. They finally made their decision to do so much to the delight of Sarah’s parents, but to my regret. We have known each other since 2009 when they had their wedding reception right across the door from me in our apartment building! So “Partir est mourir un peu” definitely applies for me in this case. But there is still the going away party later this month and a final beer with BJ in August.
