A short note on ethics. Last night during my evening contemplation an interesting insight surfaced regarding the theme of redemption that have been entertaining of late. My earlier thought was that we as humans take part in a process of redemption within Existence Divine. In it we bring to conscious understanding and interconnectedness ‘things’, aspects and content that were unknown, not understood or entangled in confusion.
My thought of last night was that rather than redeeming through our conscious activity, we humans redeem consciousness by means of our ethics and morals. This, because conscious awareness needs to be ruled by ethics lest it be applied in ways that are unethical.
In spite of the circularity of this statement, it does make clear that ethical knowledge is unique to being humans, because as humans we are capable of undergoing suffering, while being conscious at the same time. Conscious suffering produces ethics in the end, giving rise to morals to govern future behaviour.
In addition to my own observation above, I noted Pope Francis’ opinion in the news that we should not make money our idol in our world affairs, but put human dignity first, ensuring that there is sufficient employment for the people of our human society.
