Early today, and that is probably because I have a plan for this morning. It is as follows. In memory of my dear friend Sharen, I plan to make the coffee walk I made so many times to her apartment building. From there, we would walk to Phil’s for a coffee and a Danish, chat, joke and share our activities over the past week.
We met for coffees like this from 2004 until the late fall of 2009, at the Second Cup first until it closed, then as some others, but settling on Phil’s. This was because the noise level in the back area there was low, enabling Sharen to hear better.
After our coffee talk we would back to the lobby of her place and say good bye for a week. Then I’d walk back from her place on 15th Ave and 14th Street SW to my place in Mission near the former Holy Cross hospital.Over the years I often asked myself for how long I’d make those walks. As it turned out, Sharen moved to the Bridgeland Aspen or Spruce grove at the end of 2009, after the party that Anne Marie organised. So, my trips changed, but not because Sharen passed on, though she was already ninety years of age when we first met in 2004.
So, now that she did pass on a week ago today, I want to honour her by making this same walk again of five years and more hence, recalling my many such walks that led to such a valued friendship. I will also make and take a few prints of Sharen’s ‘November portrait’ and a copy of the obituary. This in case some of the old staff is still there and can remember our visits.
