Diary: Calls long and short and gender roles:

~~A short birthday call makes me recall a long call. I also give some thought to my sibling relation with Els.~~

Today is my sister Tieneke’s birthday and I should call right now as it is already late afternoon back in Zeist, NL. That conversation was ‘short but powerful’ as I translate a Dutch saying. It lasted all of 2:53 minutes, but that was because she had visitors when I phoned. Later longer in a few days or so.

Yesterday afternoon I had an hour long conversation with my friend Jeltsje as we have many topics to talk about, reincarnation being one of them. She also visits my sister Els several times a week and told me that Els now has a care giver looking in on her daily, while soups have replaced pre-cooked meals even.

Yesterday I wrote a long daily entry, did some bills, sorted some and packed up my scant used HP Scanner ScanJet G4010. My new Cannon printer also scans and does quality work, so it was time to let go. Though regretfully, as I had more ambitious plans for it than I was able to realise. It is becoming a part of letting go at my age and I am teaching myself to do this. I finally found a good birthday card for Tieneke and sent it off yesterday, late but better than never!

As I write this, I realise that we should look at women and men as >multifunctional human beings in their respective gender, societal and personal roles, some chosen others bestowed.

What occupies me this morning is the composition of a letter to my sister Els with a card, celebrating her presence in my life as that female presence from such an early age. First as sister, then as mother once she married her late husband Oltman and then as feminist after her children left the home she and Olt made.

As I write this, I realise that we should look at women and men as multifunctional human beings in their respective gender, societal and personal roles, some chosen others bestowed. It is not about one or the other part played, but rather that when we take the various roles and functions together, that we realise how our varied human experiences enrich our lives making it whole.
