Diary: Breakfast walks and talks:

~~Colleaguel breakfasts starting up, meet at the Palliser, walks and computer foibles. ~~

Yesterday our colleaguel breakfasts started again, for which I have to get up no later than seven am. This is the opening of my ‘get up’ window, which closes at eight! We had eight of us present, with some regulars missing. Some of the ladies surprised us with an hello. They meet somewhere else parallel to our event.

I walked home from the train stop at 5th street as the weather was nice yesterday and stopped at the Lindt store for a dark chocolate discount item of 165 grams at 6$$. This was followed by the Globe and Mail paper at 3$20! That used to be 10cents in 1960 when I earned 250$$ a month. In terms of papers bought that would be 2500 per month then, while today I can buy 782 papers from my monthly income as a pensioner.

These mouse clicks remind me of Luther’s nemesis Tetzel who would proclaim: “As the copper in the coin chest clings, the soul into heaven springs.”

Papers cost me 22$$ per week, which is now the most expensive way to get news that is most relevant. TV and internet news is limited to a narrowly ranging daily diet with the aim to maximise the click count. This reminds me of Luther’s nemesis Tetzel who would proclaim: “As the copper in the coin chest clings, the soul into heaven springs.”, as he sold the Pope’s indulgences back in ca1500!

Also yesterday I fired up my computer after a twenty four hour disconnect period, but Sunday’s problem returned. It is that though the computer itself powers up, the display gets no signal and goes in the stand by power mode. I suspect that it is the graphics function electronics that has given up. This could mean a new mother board and this time with service as I will not be doing this myself anymore like I used to until around 2009.

On Sunday Els and I had a good conversation as we recalled some of our childhood experiences. Herman’s cousin Joel was present with us at the Palliser meeting. Today is his last day here and then it is on to the mountains for him. PhD in Nano technology! Good brains in that family of Herman’s , as is much in evidence with Herman himself!

After our meet Elisabeth drove me home and we went for a good walk through Lindsay park, chatting as we went along about daily affairs and family. She went on to see a movie and I opted for lunch, a snooze and some reading.
