I want to make a comment regarding the announcement yesterday by US president Trump about recognising the West part of Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel. I have the feeling that this is not going to be all there is to it, but rather the beginning of a push by president Trump to clear that old logjam of pretence about a so called peace process.
In his speech to the United Nations last fall Trump said this as I paraphrase: ’Each state is entitled to promote its own interests with emphasis, creating clearness of intention. A state must respect the right of other states regardless of the manner of governance - democratic or other wise- and each state has the duty to defend and take care of its own people.’
I suggest that we go a step further and suspend the sovereignty of such states until improvements have been made that meet a set standard [of governance].
Now, I know a number of states that do not meet these criteria and I suggest that we go a step further and suspend the sovereignty of such states until improvements have been made that meet a set standard. This I suggest as a way to prevent and control situations like we see in Syria, Myanmar, Central Africa and other places. Once conflict processes have started we cannot stop them; what we can do is set up an early warning system - with money for assistance and expertise - to remedy the problems at hand. This will be much more efficient dollar wise and prevent much human suffering. In principle we are talking about a method to assist certain states in governing themselves for the benefit of their own people like US President Trump suggested. I call this ‘The Extended Trump Doctrine’ in case anybody wants to deny president Trump such honour!
